Middle School Grades 5-9 certification requirements (24 Hours)

The MO Department of Elementary and Secondary Education requires 24 hours in the content area. Depending on the certification area, some courses could be taken as part of the General Education.

Certification area requirement:

Language Arts requirements (24 hours)
24 hours of English language arts courses beyond EN110 and EN111.
The following courses are suggested in order to prepare for the state qualifying exam.
EN211  Grammar for Educators (3)
EN312  English Language and Linguistics (3)
EN323 or EN324 American Literature I or II (3)
EN340 or EN342 British Literature I or II (3)
Students must complete a total of 24 hours in English not including EN110 and EN111. Course taken as part of the General Education may be used.

Mathematics Subject Area requirements (24 hours)
24 hours of math courses above Intermediate Algebra

The following courses are suggested in order to prepare for the state qualifying exam.

Science courses in both physical and biological sciences are suggested in order to prepare for the state qualifying exam.
Students must have a total of 24 total science hours. Courses taken as part of the General Education may be used. 

Social Science Subject Area requirements (24 Hours)
24 hours of social science courses. *Please note, DESE does not recognize CJ or CT as an educational social science.*
